These tools have had a powerful impact on our students' ability to access the general education curriculum. The technology allows students to simply scan printed text, and the pen reads the words aloud to them, giving immediate support with decoding and comprehension. Because of this feature, students who previously struggled to independently read grade-level material can now participate more fully in classroom learning alongside their peers.\r\n\r\nThe pens have been used across multiple content areas including mathematics, science, social studies, and English language arts. Students are able to scan directions, word problems, vocabulary, and informational text, which helps them better understand assignments and complete their work with greater confidence. In English language arts, the pens have been especially impactful. Students have been able to access novels and other texts that they otherwise would not have been able to read independently. This has expanded their reading opportunities and allowed them to explore a much broader variety of books from the school library.\r\n\r\nPerhaps most importantly, these assistive pens have helped foster greater independence among our students. Instead of relying on an adult or peer to read instructions or passages to them, students can now access the information on their own. This independence has allowed them to complete more assignments independently and feel more confident in their abilities. The excitement students show when choosing new books and successfully engaging with classroom materials demonstrates just how meaningful this technology has been for their learning and growth.","fullyFundedDate":1768401519216,"projectUrl":"project/reading-access-for-all/10007818/","projectTitle":"Reading Access for All","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Mansfield","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10235890"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_92146","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":153,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":23,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":90,"percentIndigenous":2,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"17.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":72.7,"schoolId":92146,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Viborg - Hurley Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Viborg - Hurley Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-dakota/viborg-hurley-district-60-6/viborg-school/92146"}
