As a first-year teacher, I began the school year building my classroom from the ground up. There were so many basic supplies and learning materials that I needed in order to create the type of classroom environment I wanted for my students. Because of the generosity of our donors, my students now have access to supplies and hands-on manipulatives that help make learning more engaging, interactive, and meaningful.\r\n\r\nWe use these resources throughout our school day in many different ways. The basic classroom supplies help students complete daily assignments, participate in small groups, practice new skills, and become more independent learners. The manipulatives have been especially helpful during reading and math instruction because they allow my students to see, touch, move, and explore what they are learning instead of only completing activities with pencil and paper. In first grade, students are still developing many foundational skills, so having something concrete in their hands can help make a difficult or unfamiliar concept easier to understand.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things has been watching my students use the manipulatives during small-group instruction. When we are working on a new skill, I can model it and then give students an opportunity to practice using the materials themselves. I love seeing the moment when something finally begins to make sense for a student. Instead of simply telling me an answer, they are able to use the materials to work through the problem, explain their thinking, and build confidence in their own abilities. These resources have also allowed me to provide additional support for students who need more practice while still challenging students who are ready to move forward.\r\n\r\nMy students were so excited to see new materials being added to our classroom. At this age, even something that may seem like a simple classroom supply can make learning feel exciting and special. They immediately wanted to know what the materials were for and when they would get to use them. Their excitement reminded me that creating a positive learning environment is not always about having the biggest or most expensive resources. Sometimes it is about making sure children have the basic tools they need and presenting those tools in a way that makes them excited to learn.\r\n\r\nThese materials are also helping my students learn responsibility and independence. We are practicing how to use our classroom resources correctly, how to share materials with classmates, and how to return everything to its proper place when we are finished. These may seem like small skills, but they are an important part of first grade. My goal is not only to help my students grow academically, but also to help them become responsible, confident, and independent members of our classroom community.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue using these materials as we move into more challenging reading, writing, and math skills throughout the school year. As I learn more about each student's individual strengths and areas for growth, I will also use these resources during small-group instruction and intervention to provide targeted practice. I want my students to continue seeing learning as something they can actively participate in rather than something that is simply given to them.\r\n\r\nAs a first-year teacher, I cannot express how much your support has meant to me. There is a lot to pack in and I always plan to meet students where they are are and ensure a level of success. For my kindergarteners, we focus heavily on Phonological Awareness, Letter Name and Letter Sound Fluency. Read Aloud books offer opportunities to practice all of these skills, from finding rhyming words to initial sounds and letter scavenger hunts. Skill practice doesn't have to be boring and can incorporate knowledge building and a great story at the same time! For older grades, we use text to delve into higher levels skills such as decoding accuracy, fluency, prosody and comprehension through asking/answering questions and written responses. Text is selected with the goals of student interest and knowledge builing at the core. \r\n\r\nWe accomplish a lot in our 30 minute sessions, but proficient reading skills require stamina and that must be built over longer periods of time. They were excited to see all of the new, cool sensory support items and we went through each, talking about how they can be used as a \"tool\", not a \"toy\", to help get their minds and bodies ready for learning. Each week, they are able to access the tools and choose five to put in their individual \"Break Buckets\". They come to my room, get their bucket and set a timer, then quietly use that implementing the strategies and exercises we have practiced. Each Monday they look forward to trying out some new tools and also keeping their favorites in their bucket!\r\nThese \"Break Buckets\" have resulted in great success for these students.
