The highlighters you helped us purchase have already become a key tool during our reading and note-taking lessons. Students are using them to identify key ideas, annotate text, and track evidence in close-reading assignments. One of my favorite moments so far was watching a group of students excitedly compare color-coded notes as they worked together to determine the theme in a short story. They were proud of their work and could clearly see how organization helped deepen their understanding.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the packs of highlighters, their excitement was immediate. Many of them had never used a full color set before, and they loved being able to choose the shades that helped them organize their thinking. They felt trusted with real academic tools, and that sense of ownership helped them stay engaged and focused.\r\n\r\nWe are currently working on strengthening our reading comprehension and writing skills by analyzing text and citing evidence. Thanks to you, students now have tools that make this process more accessible and even fun. Our next steps involve applying these skills to longer pieces of literature and informational text, helping students build confidence and independence as readers. Your generosity has made a lasting impact, and we are truly grateful for your investment in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1760020639457,"projectUrl":"project/highlighting-for-success/9674337/","projectTitle":"Highlighting for Success","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Beck","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6908591"},{"teacherId":6908591,"projectId":9110705,"letterContent":"I want to say thank you \r\nfor funding my project to get fidget llamas for my students. They were so excited when they received them. I asked all my students to fill out an adoption paper about their llama. Part of the paper was asking them how their llama could help them. My students really saw the value in having these llamas. Every day they bring their llamas to class. And they are able to use them during major assignments. One such assignment was a vocab test on Friday. My students sat their working while popping their llamas. It really helped them to focus and calm down their test. This week they have their llamas while they are writing essays. On Friday, they are going to read their essays to their llamas so they can listen for any mistakes they make.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for funding this project. My class received the highlighters and right away got to using them. Students have been using them for both their reading and writing.\r\n\r\nFor reading, students have begun to learn how to annotate passages, and highlight for specific key information. I have been teaching them how to highlight only the most important information in passages. Then, once they highlight, they annotate why the information is important and how it relates to the task/skill they are performing.\r\n\r\nFor writing, students have begun to use highlighters to check their writing for strength. This allows them to visually see where their writing is weakest. After checking the strength, the highlighters also allows them to \"level up\" their writing by indicating where there are words they can change out for a more impactful diction, where they use academic vocabulary, and where they use transitional words and phrases.\r\n\r\nGiven these points, the highlighters have been extremely helpful for my students to learn visually and fully grasps the concepts and skills they are learning to master.","fullyFundedDate":1739375086960,"projectUrl":"project/highlighting-to-success/8982206/","projectTitle":"Highlighting to Success","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Beck","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6908591"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6440","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1720,"numTeachers":97,"percentFrplEligible":85,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":62,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":20,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":59.3,"schoolId":6440,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Socastee High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Socastee High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/horry-county-school-district/socastee-high-school/6440"}
