Since receiving them, they have been a staple in our classroom, immediately removing the anxiety associated with using potentially messy materials. Currently, my 6th graders are engaged in a fascinating sculpture project where they are wetting toilet paper and molding it—a wonderfully messy process—which, upon drying, creates a hard, inexpensive, and durable form. The final step involves painting these creations with acrylic paint to achieve a realistic look. The aprons allow them to fully immerse themselves in both the wet molding and the acrylic painting phases without the distraction of worrying about ruining their clothes. When they first saw the new aprons, the students reacted with excitement and a sense of being \"real artists,\" which has led to greater focus and engagement in their work.\r\n\r\nThe aprons have proven invaluable for our extracurricular activities as well. My Art Club has been utilizing them after school for the past several weeks for a service project where we are sanding and painting the school's outdoor picnic tables. This project would have been impossible without the protective gear. The aprons allow these students to safely and freely engage in these messy activities. We are now finishing up the sculpture unit and will soon move on to clay, ensuring that the aprons will continue to be put to great use as we explore other exciting, hands-on artistic processes.","fullyFundedDate":1758636839499,"projectUrl":"project/aprons-for-artists-protecting-creativit/9550600/","projectTitle":"Aprons for Artists: Protecting Creativity in the Art Room","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Baumer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9970734_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742231393763","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9970734"},{"teacherId":9523374,"projectId":9801670,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our classroom through this DonorsChoose project. Students are able to come into the library during their courtyard time and during class. I set up places for students to read, collaborate, and create. Immediately, students began asking me for chess. They asked me over and over again. Day after day. I realized very quickly that I needed to get my students chess sets. But then I wondered, how? That's where Donors Choose came to the rescue. \r\nAfter consulting with another media specialist in my district, I compiled a list of materials I would need to not only have a few Chess sets for students to play at courtyard, but also to have a chess tournament. The materials came in and I could not get them on the tables fast enough. The students were wild about playing. First there were the experienced chess players. They not only wanted to play but also wanted the timers to add an extra twist on things. But shortly after, the novice players came. The amazing thing about the sets we received was that they have cards that tell you what moves the pieces make. Just the other day, I heard a student who struggles with reading playing with another student. He was not only learning chess, but he was reading the cards out loud. He was practicing his reading without even knowing it. \r\nWe are currently working on setting up a chess tournament. I wasn't aware of how to set up such an event, but the students did, and they worked hard to teach me. Thank you so much for fulfilling our Donors choose project.
