These new books have already made such a difference for my students, especially during our daily Book Break routine. Each day, my freshmen spend 15 minutes reading a book of their choice. For many of my students, finding a book they are genuinely interested in is the biggest hurdle. Having new, high-interest choices has helped make independent reading feel much more approachable and enjoyable.\r\n\r\nMy students are diverse learners with a wide range of reading levels, interests, backgrounds, and experiences with reading. Because of that, I wanted to add books that gave them multiple ways to find success as readers. The graphic novels have been especially popular. Mexikid has caught students' attention, and students have also been excited to see an Alex Rider graphic novel alongside the traditional novel. Having Alex Rider available in Spanish has provided another important point of access for my multilingual learners. The football books have also been a huge hit with students who may not normally consider themselves readers but are eager to pick up a book connected to something they already love.\r\n\r\nThese books allow us to work on important literacy skills in a low-pressure setting. During Book Break, students build reading stamina, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency while practicing skills like making inferences, identifying character traits, recognizing conflict, and thinking about theme. Just as importantly, they are learning how to choose books that are a good fit for them and beginning to develop their own identities as readers.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom does not always look the same from student to student. One student may be immersed in a traditional novel while another is reading a graphic novel, a sports book, or a book in Spanish. What matters to me is that they are reading, thinking, and building confidence. I have especially enjoyed seeing students who usually struggle to select a book quickly gravitate toward these new titles. Instead of spending Book Break flipping through books or saying that there is \"nothing to read,\" more students are settling in and actually reading for the full 15 minutes.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has helped me create a classroom library that better reflects the students sitting in my room. These books are giving my freshmen more opportunities to see reading as something that can connect to their interests, cultures, and individual needs. The old headphones were in pretty bad shape. They were excited to put headphones in and log in to the Language online program we use daily to test audio. This online program focuses on language proficiency, reading fluency in the areas of text training and vocabulary. At times it has a higher impact than teacher to student oral reading fluency drills. The students are not as intimidated speaking and using online program. For several of my students, who have autism, this is particularly true. The technology allows them to tune into the program and \"tune out\" sensory issues that would inhibit their practice. As their teacher I can log into each student's program and listen and reflect during planning and other times to hear what my students are reading and identity key articulation or fluency concerns. During a recent lab, students used the new flasks to observe reactions and connect abstract concepts to real, observable evidence.\r\n\r\nEarth science students also benefited from these resources by completing a hands-on seafloor spreading demonstration. Using colorful, durable materials allowed students to clearly model plate movement and see how new oceanic crust forms over time. When students first saw the materials, they were excited and eager to participate, and the authenticity of the tools increased both engagement and care in their work.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue using these resources in upcoming labs and modeling activities as we explore chemical reactions, Earth's systems, and large-scale geologic processes. The extra bookbags are a great help for students that have too many things and are carrying an extra load. \r\n\r\nThe sewing machine comes in handy on two different levels. I can show the students how to fix their own bookbags and they can show others. They are full of vivid, up-close, and detailed images of creatures we cannot see with our own eyes. We recently used two of the books to supplement a plankton lab we conducted using microscopes. The students enjoyed reading more about what they were seeing. The diversity of images of plankton, such as diatoms and radiolarians, truly brought their beauty and complexity to light.\r\n\r\nNext semester, in Biology 2, I plan to utilize the tardigrade books to help students locate and study tardigrades in the classroom. We will apply what we learn about collecting them from the books, and will hopefully be successful around the school campus. I know some good spots with a lot of moss where we are sure to find some moss piglets!\r\n\r\nAgain, I sincerely appreciate your generosity in funding this project.
