Students need to feel safe, welcome, and have a space to calm down. My students were so excited when we received all of our calm down corner essentials. \r\n\r\nTheir favorite was the calm down Penny. Penny is a penguin that \"breathes\" with them. It has different modes that remind them to take deeps breaths. My students also love the breathing ball. They breathe in and out by expanding it and putting it back. Books enhance knowledge, and knowledge is such a valuable tool. While these professional development books have not been my normal suspense or romance story, the information has captivated me and kept me eagerly turning pages. \r\n\r\nWhy? As Brené Brown said, \"I'm here to get it right, not to be right.\" When it comes to teaching, there are areas where I can do better. The needs of our students are changing. More walk into our classrooms carrying heavy loads that are invisible to the eye. As a teacher, I have to pivot to support these changing needs so our students continue to learn. \r\n\r\nAs I read through the books, I highlighted the most useful tidbits in each book, putting sticky notes on pages of extra importance. So what was worthy of marking?—strategies to counter the impacts of trauma on the adolescent brain, ways to cultivate meaningful connections, and the idea that hope is learned. \r\n\r\nWhile I could chat for hours on the topics covered in these books, it would not be possible without generous donors like you putting them in my hands.","fullyFundedDate":1741877410109,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-growth-a-professional-learnin/9029207/","projectTitle":"Books for Growth: A Professional Learning Library Initiative","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Clair","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp384359_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720486964184","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/katie-clair"},{"teacherId":5440717,"projectId":8849038,"letterContent":"First, thank you again for your donations! The generosity from you has made a huge impact on my students! \r\n\r\nAs you may recall, I teach Spanish to the whole Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary school population, so it is hard to buy everyday consumable supplies for my classes without breaking my little bank. Hence, your donations of pencils have been wonderful; I teach about 600 kids and go through a lot of pencils during the school year. And of course, the donated erasers have been put to good use especially after the erasers have rubbed off their pencils. I now finally have enough to let each student have an eraser. Believe me, that is a time saver: students no longer have to get up and go find/borrow one. \r\n\r\nMy students are most thankful for the tissues: they are so happy not to use my \"itchy tissues\" (toilet paper)!\r\n\r\nWith the cardstock I have created board games and flashcards. I laminated them to make them reusable year after year.\r\n\r\nMy older kids are so excited about the scissors. We do lots of crafts and cutting through cardboard and doing that with kid scissors is a difficult task. They said this is the first time in elementary school, they were provided with \"grown-up\" scissors to use and were so appreciative not to have to cut through thick paper with kid scissors. \r\n\r\nThe students are enjoying the books. When I showed kindergarten the books, they wanted me to read all of them to them right at that moment. A 5 year-old raised yer hand and said, \"Sra. Baja, we were nicely given these books, so could you nicely read them us, por favor!\" I did read one book, but saving the rest to go with our themed units. \r\n\r\nWow, we are so grateful and are really enjoying our new supplies!
