My students are some of the most loving children I have ever had the privilege of teaching. They attend an urban Title 1 school where 99% of the students qualify and receive free breakfast and lunch. My students, being as they are kindergarten children, receive an additional bag of food every Friday to ensure they have some food to eat over the weekend. Every Friday, I have to remind my students that the food they take home is really for them only, even though nearly all of them have told me they will be sharing their food with siblings. Not enough food for every person in the family is just the beginning of their home situations. My students come to school each day carrying with them their unique home situations and, every day, I challenge them to try their best. Since the beginning of the year, I have watched my students develop their friendships and I am reminded daily of the fact that our classroom may be the strongest family they have.
