My first graders have been using the materials to strengthen their early reading and writing skills. They were really excited to see the new sound box boards when I brought them out and have used them to develop phonemic awareness in order to be ready to sound out words to read and write. We have used the clay to practice letters in a tactile way, and we have used the sentence strips to cut sentences into words and words into phonemes. The students especially liked the writing journals. They were happy to have writing lines that were appropriate for developing fine motor skills and they especially liked to have a space to draw a picture. \r\n\r\nWe have also been able to strengthen speaking and listening skills by using the doll cut-outs. They made a \"me doll\" and have used it as a puppet to practice verbalizing, and also as a way to display what they have learned about body systems. We are also using the picture cards to make up stories and practice sequence. They practiced writing new characters, added drawings and examples, then scanned their pages to organize and share their work electronically.
