With this project we added more of the Spot of Emotion books to our collection. These picture books are great read-alouds and my students eagerly look forward to them. (To the point where a few of them ask every day if we're doing a Spot today!). This set of books brought another 17 books and the teacher's guide to our classroom library. So far we've already worked with the Spot of Calm, Spot of Frustration, Spot of Empathy, and Peaceful Spot. \r\n\r\nI always try to do something hands-on when we read so that students can internalize and remember the strategies to help recognize and handle their big emotions. The group LOVED the Calm Spot activity. The case of water that was part of this project was emptied and used to create visual timers. We mixed oil and water, along with food coloring and glitter (think: lava lamps) in the bottles. Students can shake the bottles and use this as a timer to reset in their calm spot. We also learned to belly breathe. (Smell the flower, blow the bubble) when we need help finding peace. \r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding things that happened, was also one of the smallest. One of my students that struggles with coping skills was feeling frustrated. When I walked by him in the hallway and gave him a questioning thumbs up as a nonverbal check in, he looked at me, held up his hand and showed me the \"tap, tap, tap, tap and breathe\" strategy for frustration that we had been practicing. He had generalized this outside my classroom and was using it spontaneously. This is a huge step for him!\r\n\r\nI can't thank you enough for your continued support. My students absolutely love these Spots and are learning so much about their own emotions and feelings, and more importantly how to handle them.
