With the sand trays, students can practice forming letters while saying the corresponding sounds. They can smooth the sand and try again, giving them repeated opportunities to practice in an engaging, hands-on way.\r\nThe decodable books give beginning and struggling readers opportunities to apply the phonics patterns they are learning in connected text. Having actual books to hold, read, and revisit was an important goal of this project. These books help us provide purposeful reading practice with materials selected to match students' developing skills.\r\nThis week, after using the new materials, one of our second grade students who has been struggling to decode suddenly said, \"I'm reading! Look, I'm really reading now!\" And she was! For the first time, this student was able to lift words off the page independently.\r\nAs a literacy coach, I deeply appreciate resources that help teachers turn instruction into meaningful practice.
