It has been wonderful to see the books become part of our everyday classroom routines!\r\n\r\nMy students were so excited when they first saw the new materials! Their faces lit up as they looked through the books, and there were lots of excited comments about which books they wanted to read. For many of them, the hardest part was waiting their turn to explore everything! At this age, students are learning important foundational skills such as identifying letters and sounds, decoding unfamiliar words, building fluency, and increasing their vocabulary. As we read, we also work on comprehension skills like retelling important events, identifying characters and settings, making predictions, asking and answering questions, and finding the lesson or message in a story. These books also help us introduce students to a variety of characters, experiences, and perspectives while helping them develop a lifelong love of reading.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom happens in many different ways throughout the day! We enjoy interactive read-alouds where we stop to talk, think, predict, and ask questions together. Students also participate in small-group reading activities and spend time independently exploring books that interest them. You might see students reading quietly on their own, practicing with a partner, taking turns reading aloud, or gathering together to discuss a story.
