They are quite used to not having access to new materials. We have made due over many years with donations that are not always the best quality. With your donations my students learned to be bolder with their experimentation and exploration of technical strategies. The sound structure of the donated canvases gave students the freedom to pursue a body of rigorous work instead of just making one overly precious project. \r\nOne student made almost a painting a week during that nine week block. They were able to have more than one painting going simultaneously and could rotate canvases in and out while one dried, another was started. The student knew they could come and retrieve another surface as needed and were not limited by material drought.\r\nThe abundance of materials helped stimulate work processes of confidence and bravery in experimentation, broadening and expanding perceptual possibilities. \r\nThese students, in the past, had been taught in such a way, that did not support error or revision due to constant fear of waste. While we are mindful of the gift of materials that we have been provided, we are not in constant fear of running out. The removal of that burden has made teaching and learning a much more joyful process. Instead of being distracted by hunger, students can grab a quick, healthy option and get back to learning. It's been especially meaningful to see students making thoughtful choices.\r\n\r\nThese snacks have become a small but powerful way to build community in our classroom. Students know that their needs are seen and supported, and that helps create a more positive, caring learning environment. One memorable moment was during a writing workshop — a student who was struggling to focus asked quietly if they could have a snack. We're in the middle of it now, so I am able to report back with \"live\" responses from students. The verdict? They are very into this book! I thought they would be because McCandless' story is one tragedy and intrigue and Krakauer's writing is immersive. Still, seventeen-year-olds keep you guessing, so I'm relieved they're this engaged!\r\n\r\nWe had our first discussion on Chapters 1-7 last week, and the participation was off the charts. One class had 100% of students discussing and my other two classes were very close to that with about 90% of students wanting to speak on the book. English classes don't run very well if the students aren't reading and engaged, so this is wonderful--especially given that it's the end of the year! We're focusing on transcendentalism, isolation/alienation, and McCandless' state of mind generally along with how Krakauer writes this book. It's going well and I cannot wait to discuss the rest of the book with these thoughtful, passionate students.\r\n\r\nAgain, thank you for putting your hard-earned money towards this projects and giving me the change to work with students on this book. The materials have enabled me to kick off a kindness project with the help of my 7th graders and the CAPA Middle School Student Envoy team. \r\n\r\nCAPA Middle School's Student Envoy is a program that encourages kids to be leaders and to spread positive messages and energy through the building. We hosted a hot chocolate bar to kick off our kindness initiative, and during the event, we encouraged students to nominate others for showing consistent kind acts and attitudes. After the nominations were collected and reviewed, we designed a space in the building where we would display photos of the nominees to celebrate them for showing good character. Student photographers were so motivated to collect the Polaroids, and student nominees were excited to be recognized. Thanks to your help, we will be able to keep this project going with the film we haven't used. Students designed boxes for nomination forms to keep rolling in. We want kindness and civility to be the norm at CAPA! \r\n\r\nIn addition to the display of Polaroids, we were also able to decorate the main floor hallway with the bulletin board sets from the project. Every student in the building can walk by and be reminded to be kind. The display also features posters with famous people from the past and present sharing a thought/quote about the importance of being kind. \r\n\r\nThis project is starting small, but our hope is that we can maintain a climate of kindness at CAPA, and we your help, we have begun!","fullyFundedDate":1732042039442,"projectUrl":"project/populating-kindness-with-polaroids/8935602/","projectTitle":"Populating Kindness With Polaroids","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Manifold","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7380541_orig.png?crop=387,387,x0,y25&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683021346493","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7380541"},{"teacherId":9833877,"projectId":8939739,"letterContent":"I hope this message finds you well!
