The beginning of the school year we asked students what they had fun doing over summer break. A lot of responses were the beach, Kennywood and splash parks. With that being said, these water tables and accessories came into my vision of extending their water play in a more academic way. Students did not know they were learning rather they just thought wow, I'm playing and getting all wet! \r\n\r\nPrior to our water day, we had a lesson on the 5 senses. The day we used the water materials we focused our discussion on the sense of touch. We explored various items in our classroom and asked students for descriptive words. \r\n\r\nWhen they first saw the water materials it was like a magnet. We put the items in a grassy play yard with other things to explore but the students all gravitated to the water. Students first explored on their own, then we asked open-ended questions. Such as: How many scoops of water will it take to fill up your bucket if you use a sponge, cup or hand? What does the water feel like dripping through the top or pouring through the side? What items are magnetic? How do you know? What does water feel like? For young children, being able to choose a special prize from the treasure chest is a wonderful way to celebrate their accomplishments and build confidence.\r\n\r\nThe prizes also help create a positive and encouraging classroom environment where students feel proud of their progress. Instead of focusing only on what they need to improve, our children are reminded that their hard work and good choices are noticed and celebrated. Having a well-stocked treasure chest gives us more opportunities to motivate and encourage every child throughout the school year. Our students need to be warm and comfortable when traveling to and from school and when participating in outdoor activities. Receiving new coats, hats, and gloves meant that our students had items that fit them properly and helped protect them from the cold Pittsburgh weather. The blankets also provided something warm and comforting that they could take home and enjoy with their families.\r\n\r\nThe impact of these donations extends into the classroom as well. When students arrive at school warm, comfortable, and with their basic needs met, they are better prepared to participate in their day. Instead of worrying about being cold or not having what they need, they can focus their energy on learning, playing, building friendships, and simply being children.\r\n\r\nIt was also special for our students to receive items that were new and chosen for them. At the Pre-K age, something as simple as receiving a brand-new coat or picking out a hat can bring so much excitement and pride. Seeing their smiles and excitement reminded us that these donations were about much more than winter clothing. They showed our students that people in their community care about them and want them to be safe, warm, and successful.\r\n\r\nThese donations also provided support to our families by helping relieve some of the financial responsibility of purchasing winter necessities. Our school has decent printers and supplies that are accessible in the main office. However, because our class includes many children with special needs, it can be difficult leaving the classroom for even a brief period to collect printed materials. \r\nAdditionally, I send home colorful calendars for each month so that parents are well-informed.
