My students were very excited and curious when they first saw the new materials. They wanted to touch, explore, and learn how each item worked. \r\n My next step is to continue teaching students how to use these resources independently and appropriately. The staff here are working with students on recognizing their emotions and sensory needs, choosing a tool that can help, and communicating when help is needed to support. Our math curriculum required them to play games where they had to find sums within 5 and sums within 10. The games require the use of the 10-frames and colored counters. We have paper 10-frames from previous years, but when they were given the opportunity to use the large, magnetic, colorful ones...they got more excited than ever! \r\nBeyond the pure excitement, a specific skill we used them for was a game like Bingo called 5-In-A-Row. Students picked a card with a number from 0-9. Then, they put the correct number of red counters in the frame. The next step was to use the yellow counters to show what the sum would be if you added one or added two. For example, if you drew the number four, by using the yellow counters, you would see that four red counters plus one yellow counter would make five and plus two yellows would make six. Lastly, they would take a chip and add it to the 5-In-A-Row game mat. The person getting five in a row first was the winner. It was great to see if they understood the strategy of determining whether it was better for them to pick the sum created by adding one or the sum created by adding two.\r\nAlthough we won't be using the base-ten magnetic blocks and magnetic fraction pieces until later in the year, I predict they'll be a great motivator like the 10-frames.
