Because my students have varying cognitive challenges, new tactile and visual resources are always a huge event. There were literal cheers from my students who are more verbal, and wide-eyed smiles and reaching hands from my nonverbal students.\r\n\r\nThe wow factor of having brand-new, high-quality math manipulatives, such as the \"Counting Bears,\" made them feel incredibly special. In a Life Skills setting, we often have to adapt or \"make do\" with older materials; seeing these modern resources dedicated specifically to their growth gave them a visible boost in confidence and excitement.\r\n\r\nThese materials are being used daily to bridge the gap between our students' varying ability levels. For my students working on a Kindergarten to 1st-grade level, we use the counting bears and the Magnetic Base Ten set to model problems on the board. Meanwhile, other students use the Addition and Subtraction Regrouping Sets to complete problems independently, focusing on fine motor development, cause-and-effect, and basic task engagement.\r\n\r\nFor my students working at a 4th-grade level, these materials help them practice following multi-step directions, increase their \"time-on-task,\" and build foundational vocational skills for life after high school. Whether we are in small-group rotations or monitoring individual progress, these resources allow me to differentiate instruction so every student is challenged without being frustrated. Previously, I only had one set of Base-Ten Blocks. I am thrilled to share that one student has already mastered them and now works independently! This progress allows me to transition those original tools to other students while using the new materials to foster independence across the entire classroom.\r\n\r\nThe most significant impact has been the increase in autonomy. For students with intellectual disabilities, the goal is always to move toward independence. These materials have provided the exact scaffolding my students need to complete tasks with less \"hand-over-hand\" prompting from staff.\r\n\r\nI have seen a decrease in frustration-based behaviors because the students now have tools that are age-appropriate for high schoolers but cognitively accessible for their specific needs. My nonverbal students are using the Counting Bears and whiteboards to demonstrate their knowledge in ways they couldn't before, while my more academic students are gaining the pride that comes with mastering a new skill. You have helped create a \"can-do\" environment in our room.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your incredible generosity. In a Life Skills classroom, progress is often measured in small, hard-won milestones, and your gift has provided the fuel for those victories. It can be easy for students with significant disabilities to feel overlooked, but your support tells them that their education and their future matter.\r\n\r\nBy providing these manipulatives, you haven't just given us classroom supplies—you've given my students the chance to prove what they are capable of. We are so grateful for your kindness and for being part of our classroom community.","fullyFundedDate":1769178510131,"projectUrl":"project/life-skills/10021543/","projectTitle":"Life Skills","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. P","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10383247"},{"teacherId":9092525,"projectId":8497705,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous contribution to our classroom! We were able to provide hygiene products for many more students throughout the school than in previous years. Our students have really enjoyed being able to make their own bag of products and choose what they need. Being able to aid students on a more regular basis rather than just one time throughout the year has allowed us to access much more of our student population and make more positive connections with students we may not have been able to connect with otherwise. You ensured I got a supply of cleaning materials that got us through cold season and spring allergies, classroom basics like folders and pencils, snacks for our in-class PBIS (Positive Behavior Incentive System) where students proudly won \"class vs teacher,\" and the addition of dry-erase response boards to increase focus and detail in our class discussions. You have had a big part of making my classroom better for students, and for me as well. While I invest a lot in my own classroom, resources are sparse to meeting student needs and learning styles. I'm very grateful that you all are able to make my students have a better day and better resources.","fullyFundedDate":1735521172906,"projectUrl":"project/ms-frosts-class-store-classroom-supp/8732867/","projectTitle":"Ms. Frost's Class Store & Classroom Supplies!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Frost","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8234294_orig.jpg?crop=960,960,x0,y208&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727125780325","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8234294"},{"teacherId":8707009,"projectId":7590667,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity! Your donation has already made a huge difference in our classroom. We're using the supplies and snacks every single day, and it has completely changed our in-class experience.\r\nThe new resources have become essential for our \"math marathons\" before quizzes. The snacks provide a much-needed brain boost, helping students stay focused and confident during these intense review sessions. One day, a student was stuck on a particularly tricky word problem, and after a quick snack break, they went back to their desk and solved it. It was a wonderful moment. The new supplies are also in constant use; the graph paper is perfect for our coordinate plane practice, and the colored pencils help students visualize different functions and inequalities. Having plenty of supplies means no one ever has to share a ruler or wait for a calculator.\r\n\r\nThe students' reaction was incredible. When they saw the big boxes, their faces lit up. There were cheers for the snacks, of course, but what was truly special was their excitement about the new supplies. They were thrilled to have their own brand-new protractors. They immediately got to work, eager to use the materials. Their excitement wasn't just about the new things; it was about knowing they had all the tools they needed to be successful.\r\n\r\nOur next step in the curriculum is to move from graphing single functions to systems of equations. This unit requires students to graph multiple lines on the same plane to find where they intersect. The new graph paper and colored pencils will be essential for this, helping them keep their work organized and easy to read. Your donation will continue to impact their learning every day as we build on our skills and take on new mathematical challenges.","fullyFundedDate":1700592187863,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-9th-grade-math-minds-the-imp/7590667/","projectTitle":"Empowering 9th Grade Math Minds: The Impact of Essential Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Williams","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8707009_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1663601350613","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/khalil-newark2philly"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_90728","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":718,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":88,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"21.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":59.6,"schoolId":90728,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Philadelphia High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Philadelphia High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/pennsylvania/philadelphia-city-school-district/west-philadelphia-high-school/90728"}
