It allows them to choose their own stories and control their environment, which is transforming our classroom into a more inclusive and accessible space. Most importantly, it's helping them develop a lifelong love for books in a way that is engaging and joyful. \r\n\r\nThe most exciting aspect for my students is the hands-on nature of the product. Being able to interact directly with the Toniebox to facilitate their own learning experiences is a huge hit. \r\n\r\nAs for specific students, I've noticed that several children who previously struggled with traditional reading formats have especially warmed to this technology. They find the tactile and auditory experience much more approachable, which has helped them engage with storytelling and literacy in a more meaningful and independent way.\r\n\r\nWe are so grateful for the support that made this possible!","fullyFundedDate":1772569488979,"projectUrl":"project/and-the-tonie-goes-to-ms-ss-class/10012963/","projectTitle":"And the Tonie Goes To... Students who arrive hungry now have access to quick, reliable nourishment that helps them focus on learning. Since the donation, we have noticed a clear improvement in students' attention and participation during lessons. Having snacks available has also reduced disruptions caused by hunger or low energy. Students feel cared for and supported, which has strengthened the overall classroom community. The snacks have helped create a more equitable environment for students who may not always have access to food during the school day. We have seen increased willingness from students to stay engaged during longer activities and discussions. The donation has also allowed us to build in small moments of connection, as sharing snacks often sparks positive conversation. Overall, the snacks have contributed to a calmer, more productive classroom atmosphere. The students noticed it as soon as they walked in the classroom. It's bigger, brighter, and softer than the previous rug. We immediately put it to use in a variety of ways.\r\n\r\nOne goal for the art room is for it to be welcoming, cozy, and slightly unconventional. The rug allows for multiple uses and creates this unique sense of belonging. Many students have difficulty sitting at a table for 45 minutes. The rug was especially helpful to give our emotional support students room to stretch, wiggle, and recline while we read \"Life Doesn't Frighten Me at All,\" a poem by Maya Angelou that's illustrated by Basquiat. This flexible seating also works as a low sensory area for students who need less distractions or a temporary space to get away from distractions at their group table. \r\n\r\nSitting on the rug together for whole group instruction and looking at slides of art works better when students are in a \"listening and sharing\" space that's separate from the \"creating space\" of their group tables. They can see the smart board easily, share ideas with partners, and join discussions easier when we're all close together. The elementary students enjoyed watching \"City Island\" on PBS kids. The bold outlines, bright colors, and anthropomorphic buildings, served as inspiration for our James Rizzi style city scape watercolors.\r\n\r\nI also immediately saw the value in using the rug as an incentive. We have table team points to motivate students who are on task and helpful. Teams with the most points are invited to start their drawing warm up, an activity that starts each class, on the rug. I did have one class that was having a hard time keeping their hands to themselves while seated on the rug so they lost this privilege for the day but they will have a chance to earn it back next week.\r\n\r\nAll of these benefits were instantly apparent in just the first week! There will be more games, movement breaks, and whole glass activities in the near future.
