The books, games, calming tools, sensory supports, and activities help students recognize and understand their emotions, identify appropriate coping strategies, communicate their needs, solve problems, and build positive relationships with peers and adults.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is more than simply reading a book. We use stories to introduce real-life situations and help students connect characters' experiences to their own emotions and challenges. Students practice identifying feelings, discussing different choices, and thinking about what they could do when they experience big emotions. We also use calming tools, games, and sensory activities to practice these skills in a safe and supportive environment.\r\n\r\nMy students especially enjoy the interactive books and activities because they make SEL skills feel fun and relatable. Students who may have difficulty talking about their emotions often become more comfortable expressing themselves when they can connect their feelings to a character or hands-on activity. For students who benefit from structure and visual supports, having their own bound materials makes learning feel more manageable and gives them a sense of ownership and accomplishment.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for my students is being able to create something that looks and feels like a real book. They are proud to see their hard work put together into a finished product they can keep, use, and share. Students who may sometimes struggle with confidence or motivation are especially excited when they can see their progress in a tangible way.\r\n\r\nThis project is more than a binding machine—it is a way to help my students see that their work matters and that they are capable of creating something meaningful. By the end of the school year, I had students requesting quiet reading time instead of computer free time. Students now have options such as wobble stools, floor seating, and alternative workspaces that allow them to choose where they learn best. One special moment was watching a student who often struggled to stay focused complete an entire lesson while using a wobble stool—he was engaged, calm, and proud of his work.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new materials, their excitement was immediate. They were eager to explore the different seating choices and took great care in trying each option. Many students expressed how comfortable the new seating felt and how it helped them concentrate better during lessons.\r\n\r\nThanks to this project, our next steps focus on building student independence and self-awareness. Students are learning how to choose seating that best supports their learning during reading, writing, and small-group activities. We are also reflecting together on what works best for each student so they can make thoughtful choices that help them succeed. The NatGeo books are perfectly leveled for my emerging readers. They love reading them to me and how the longer words are also spelled phonetically. The Goosebumps books are a hit with my higher level readers who are just beginning to read chapter books. The beanbag chairs are a good incentive for expected behavior, as well. My students have started asking if they could sit and read to each other.
