Rabbit!\" was the perfect mentor text to kick off our opinion writing unit! Students from Kindergarten to fifth grade all shared whether they thought the main character was a duck or a rabbit and gave reasons to support their opinion. Everyone was able to participate including English Language Learners and students with limited verbal or writing ability. \r\n\r\nThen we moved on to our next book, \"Facts vs. Opinions vs. Robots\" which provided a concrete understanding of the difference between facts and opinions in a fun and engaging way. There was a lot of practice sharing opinions verbally and then writing opinions with a topic sentence and supporting reasons. We talked about giving strong reasons to support our opinions which include details, comparisons and adjectives. \r\n\r\nAttached are pictures of some of the opinion pieces my second grade students published at the end of the unit. We are looking forward to using the \"Twenty Questions\" mentor text to develop characters to get in and out of trouble in our next unit on fiction writing. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your support of students becoming writers!","fullyFundedDate":1768431793245,"projectUrl":"project/when-students-become-writers-part-2/10009074/","projectTitle":"When Students Become Writers, Part 2","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mae","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8183820_orig.jpg?crop=1160,1160,x0,y193&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1638116708944","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8183820"},{"teacherId":8183820,"projectId":10010163,"letterContent":"Thank you for providing my students with new prizes to stock our team store! Students are excited every Friday when they get to use their team's points to pick out prizes. I give every student play money and they carefully look at the prizes that cost 1 cent, 2 cents and 3 cents. They think about how cute the stretchy sloths are compared to how cool the slime is and check to see if they have enough money for both. I notice that often students will use their money to buy prizes for siblings and parents. It makes me happy that our team store gives them the ability to be generous and express their affection for family members.\r\n\r\nThroughout the week students can earn points as a team by putting away their work, coming to their spots on the carpet or lining up at voice level 0. Students can also earn points by translating for others in the class, doing extra cleaning tasks or doing a good job in our Specials: Music, PE, Library and Art. All year we have been working on teamwork and having these prizes as incentives makes it all the more fun for my students. \r\n\r\nI also asked for bubble guns which I bring out to recess to celebrate when we reach goals as a team. They are creating new projects that are more and more complicated every time. Our next project is going to be an LED shaped light box with a scene. Without your generosity my students would be stuck with what they call \"boring\" colors and quickly no colors at all. Without the filament our 3d printer is nothing more then a cool tool connecting dust. Thank you so much for keeping this amazing opportunity available for my students. Without you this wouldn't be possible. In the pictures you can see some of their creations and what happens when something fails. I bring in their fall and then we sit down to hehe to look closer at their code. I wasn't really expecting it to, as it was a bit of a hodge-podge of random items from my wish-list, but boy have we felt the impact of these new materials in the art room at Glenfair! \r\n\r\nMy lefty students (especially in the upper grades, 3-5) finally have scissors that meet their needs and give them an equal opportunity to practice essential cutting skills. The lefty scissors are so fancy, sometimes I catch my right-handed students sneaking them out of the drawer for a try! \r\n\r\nThe \"desperately needed marker refresh\" has been a game changer for everyone, but especially my youngest students (K-2) who are so glad they don't have to try to make dried out markers color anymore! This past week, kinder and first grade has been using markers to practice drawing different types on lines. They LOVE visiting the marker box for brand new juicy markers.\r\n\r\nLast but certainly not least, my 3rd graders have been the first to embark on the adventure of all things latch hooking. When I showed one class of 3rd graders images of finished latch hook projects to introduce the medium, several students' jaws dropped. They were SO excited to give it a try. I am impressed with how quickly students have picked up the skill! It's tricky at first, but once they get the hang of it, it's so fun to watch them progress and, best of all, help each other (a teacher's dream!). I've had students giving up their recesses to come visit the art room for extra latch hooking. I am currently working out a system for students to borrow latch hooks over the weekend because there have been so many requests! I can't wait to try out latch hooking at other grade levels-- this is definitely a fan favorite so far! \r\n\r\nIt simply wouldn't have been possible without your generosity-- thank you so much for providing these resources for our art classroom at Glenfair here in Portland.","fullyFundedDate":1766527677154,"projectUrl":"project/bits-and-bobs-for-art-class/9964983/","projectTitle":"Bits and Bobs for Art Class","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Blair","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9932546_orig.png?crop=1184,1184,x0,y252&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757131695095","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9932546"},{"teacherId":3376946,"projectId":9544759,"letterContent":"The kids made keychains with their names in them. Without this money, I would not have been able to purchase these books, as my limited budget is spent on student recommendations, replacing worn, popular titles, and that is about it this year!\r\n\r\nMany students in Reynold's School District have a hard time attending to learning. There are many reasons that school is a challenge, including trauma, learning disabilities such as ADHD, difficulties in the home, and sleep problems. Many of the books on this list address several of these challenges and provide a way for teachers and counselors to connect with students in a small group reading or one-on-one. They also provide a tool for discussion during morning meetings. The books have been catalogued and placed in \"Social Emotional Learning\" tubs in the library. The books can be checked out to staff or checked out directly to students with teacher, counselor, or other staff recommendations. The multicultural titles and books such as \"Adopting a Pet\" were introduced to the students and put on the shelves for check out.
