Your donation will have an impact on my students for many years! My students last year were so excited to receive these books and I already have planned lessons around these books for the upcoming year. We use these books as our anchor texts for social studies lessons, inspiration for art projects, as well as read aloud for the joy of reading. \r\n\r\nSomething that stood out to me from my teacher training is the idea of books as windows and mirrors. This means that students can see themselves represented in literature as a mirror on their experiences, as well as a window into experiences different than their own. Having so many new books that have a wide variety of representation will allow for us to have many mirrors and windows in our classroom. \r\nThis was something that I did not experience in my own education. I remember not \r\nseeing any children's books that represented my family and our experiences until I was an adult. Because of your support, our Mindful Art elective became the highlight of the week for my students.\r\n\r\nIt was amazing to watch our K-4th graders—who represent a wide range of ages and energy levels—come together in such a peaceful way. As soon as the art materials came out, a wave of calm and focus settled over the students.\r\n\r\nThe modeling clay was a huge hit! The students loved the sensory experience of \"waking up\" the clay, rolling it between their palms to warm it up before shaping their pinch pots. There is something truly meditative about that process that grounded even my most high-energy learners.\r\n\r\nBeyond the art itself, these materials became a tool for teaching kindness. Because we were sharing supplies, the students practiced using polite language to ask for what they needed and showed impressive patience while waiting for materials to be passed out. Watching a 4th grader patiently help a Kindergartener with their clay was a beautiful side effect of this project that I hadn't fully anticipated.\r\n\r\nWhen I told the class that people they had never met—kind strangers—wanted them to have these supplies because they believed in their creativity, the kids were genuinely touched. Many of my student's families rely on SNAP and the snacks provided extra nutrition for the weekends. I packed each student with three snack for the month the shutdown was happening.
