The Nintendo game allows them to be more interactive and have a game mentality when doing math. Many of them enjoy the challenge-based structure, where they can solve problems, unlock new levels, and track their progress over time. It turns boring practice into something they actively look forward to rather than a routine assignment. The collaborative features are also a big hit, as students work together, compare strategies, and celebrate each other's success. \r\n\r\nTechnology based games like the Nintendo Switch game have made a meaningful difference in how our students engage with math. Interactive tools allow them to visualize concepts that can otherwise feel abstract, such as graphing functions or exploring transformations. The organization bins are very helpful in setting out supplies and making the space feel more welcoming (previously I had pencils and other supplies stored in various cardboard boxes). \r\n\r\nOur first unit of study was population ecology where we focused on the great migration of wildebeest across the Serengeti. Students worked with rainfall and population data and were able to use the calculators to help analyze data for their art projects. We also used them to calculate the biodiversity index of our local watershed when we cooperated with the local watershed council on their dam removal project.\r\n\r\nThe students also appreciate the snacks! Many students lack the resources to purchase supplies, and often students forget or lose notes and assignments when they don't have a way to keep track of them.\r\nFrom an equity lens, it's beyond helpful to be able to provide every student the same supplies to begin with. Very few students already have an organizational system to begin with, and the ability to model the organization for them gets them off to a good start.\r\nThis was the first year I taught Data Reasoning using the coding platform Pyret. This was challenging for me, but many students struggled. I was grateful to have my own notebook that could mirror theirs and be confident they would have the materials necessary to create a reference book for themselves. \r\nThis was not only helpful during class, but many students asked if they could keep the notebook.
