The new storage has made a real difference in our RISE classroom. My students with autism do best when their environment is structured, predictable, and organized. Before receiving these materials, we did not have enough secure storage, which meant students could sometimes access classroom materials before they were ready to use them. Now, I am able to keep materials organized and safely stored while still making the things students need for learning easily available.\r\n\r\nOne of the biggest differences has been during our daily learning rotations and transitions. I can prepare only the materials students need for a specific activity instead of having extra items out that may become a distraction. When an activity is finished, students are also learning that materials have a specific place where they belong. Something as simple as putting an item back in its container or transitioning to a table with fewer distractions is part of building independence for my students.\r\n\r\nOur next step is continuing to strengthen those routines throughout the school year. We are working on communication, academics, social skills, and daily living skills, but so much of that learning begins with having a classroom where students feel safe and know what to expect. These snacks were such a treat for our kiddos to look forward to everyday. \r\n\r\nOne of the key pillars to success for our students is ensuring that our kiddos are fed. If students come to school hungry they struggle to focus and be successful. These snacks not only nourished their bodies but also their spirit. The children enjoy playing with the toys. They have created several little figurines with them. Since this is their first year in school they enjoy looking at cool toys and creating tons of masterpieces. We use our new rug daily for community circle, whole-group lessons and read-alouds, creating a comfortable space for learning. When students visit the library area, they love sitting on the flower cushions while reading.\r\nThe sensory manipulatives are used in our calm-down center and help students regulate their emotions and refocus. The flexible building tubes and LEGOs are a big hit many towers, cars, and creative structures are built every day during centers.\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were so excited and eager to explore. Their smiles said it all! Moving forward, we will continue using these resources to support hands-on learning, creativity, collaboration, and social-emotional growth.
