The funds you donated helped provide reading materials for students who live in, and go to school in, a high poverty area. Knowing that their community cares about them and wants them to succeed means a great deal to them and is highly motivating. My dream is to make lifelong readers of all my students, and your donation has gone a long way towards making this dream a reality. One of the biggest issues that students of today currently have is the nearly constant distraction of screens and social media. Providing them with physical reading materials helps develop their reading abilities in a way that they enjoy and separates them from their screens. \r\n\r\nMultiple times a week, I provide students time to read independently in class, so they can use the books they choose to read. They use their choice reading materials to complete class assignments and participate in discussions. Doing so, helps the students develop comprehension and close reading skills in an enjoyable way. Independent reading also helps students develop autonomy and fluency in reading while encouraging them to practice close reading skills taught in class. Some of the major skills developed in this way are: making connections to prior knowledge and readings, making inferences, self-questioning, summarizing, analyzing the authors craft or writing methods utilized, evaluating personal understanding, and reflecting on reading. \r\n\r\nGraphic novel reading also helps students develop their contextual knowledge. Graphic novels are unique in the way that the story is told to the reader. Not only do they need to understand the text on the page, but they also need to be able to understand how the text connects to the images. When students read, we stop periodically and have conversations about the art style and how the elements presented work together to tell a story. I also urge them to write down ideas they have about the text, inferences they make, and questions they have as they read. \r\n\r\nOne of the student favorites so far is \"The Okay Witch.\" In my class, there are a large percentage of students of color. The protagonist of \"The Okay Witch\" is a young girl who is black. This is not a common element presented in literature and students need to be able to connect with the characters they are reading about. Being represented in literature is extremely important for students. It allows them to have a mirror of themselves in their text. Having this deep connection helps develop reading skills even more. \r\n\r\nAnother highly sought after title are the books in the \"Hooky\" series. A large number of students have put themselves in line to check the series out. Many of them had already read the first volume from the school library, but they had no idea that there were two other books in the series. Getting students to read books from a series helps them feel connected to the character's stories over time, and it helps them notice how a plot can connect and continue between works. Some of my students have even declared their desire to begin writing stories of their own. \r\n\r\nYour donation is making a huge difference in the acquisition of reading skills.
