As we read Maus by Art Spiegelman together, students are learning how visual storytelling can communicate complex historical events with depth and emotion. Many donors love books, but graphic novels require students to read in multiple ways at once — they analyze dialogue, expressions, symbolism, panel layout, and pacing. Students are building comprehension skills, historical understanding, and critical thinking as they interpret both the words and the artwork. They are also strengthening vocabulary, inference skills, and reading stamina.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is intentional and focused. I read aloud while students follow along in their own copy, practicing tracking text, staying engaged, and building stillness during sustained reading time. The graphic format keeps even reluctant readers invested; students frequently pause to point out details in the illustrations or ask thoughtful questions about character choices and historical context. The visuals help build understanding for students who may struggle with traditional novels, allowing them to access rigorous content with greater confidence.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who typically find reading challenging have shown noticeable growth in both focus and participation. The combination of an engaging graphic novel and small incentives like Jolly Ranchers has helped some students regulate their bodies and remain attentive during reading time. The treats serve both as sensory support and as positive reinforcement for students who go above and beyond or demonstrate strong effort. Overall, this project has strengthened literacy skills, encouraged empathy, and shown my students that reading can be powerful, accessible, and deeply meaningful.","fullyFundedDate":1769177854948,"projectUrl":"project/connecting-art-history-and-literacy-th/10035778/","projectTitle":"Connecting Art, History, and Literacy Through Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Newman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9795858"},{"teacherId":9968697,"projectId":9171032,"letterContent":"Our 3D Pens in Action!\r\n\r\nOh gosh — count me in!
