This project was about so much more than making cards. It was an opportunity to teach my students the importance of kindness, compassion, and giving back to our community.\r\n\r\nMy students loved getting creative with their cards, using colorful materials and writing sweet, encouraging messages to brighten someone else's day. It was so special to see the thought and effort they put into each card, knowing it would bring a smile to someone they had never even met. Through this experience, they were able to practice their writing skills while learning that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference.\r\n\r\nAlthough our cards are complete, the lessons learned through this project will continue throughout our school year. I hope my students will always remember how powerful a simple act of kindness can be. We were able to learn about tessellations and studied famous artists who have used them. The students learned how to trace a stencil, how to match them up to create the patterns, and then create their colors and patterns. They have loved learning about how math and art overlap. There was absolute joy upon seeing their art unfold. They took their work home and I heard the next day that their families had hung their work on their walls at home. This project had a big impact on me and my students. Thankfully, the stencils are sturdy and will be able to continue to be used next year and beyond. Thank you for believing in public education. My students are thriving with the new STEM building blocks purchased through Donors Choose. Students with learning disabilities and dyslexia have to work extra hard to maintain phonological awareness and basic reading skills and these magnetic cubes help them to practice their reading skills. Learning with hands on objects is engaging and research based to enhance retention of skills.\r\n\r\nThe STEM building blocks arrived and we opened them together in order to excite them and encourage them to meet their reading goals. Many of the kids told me that it felt like Christmas or birthday gifts. Their excitement and joy reminded me of why I teach and why I want kids to be successful readers.\r\n\r\nFunding our project has allowed us to give additional reinforcement towards meeting their reading goals. The kids are proud of the small gains they make and are encouraging their peers to keep working hard.
