The students were in awe of the amount of pencils we received...I explained that last year this was the amount of pencils I purchased because we were losing our pencils so rapidly. They were shocked at the amount.\r\n\r\nThey decided to come up with a way to keep from losing pencils. I've been impressed with their ideas. The one we landed on was to color code pencils by desk using my vinyl tape. Every table has ten pencils and when those pencils get dull, they put them in the sharpen bin and grab 10 sharpened pencils to replace those. I have a student sharpener who checks the bin when they are done with their work. If there are pencils needing sharpened, they sharpen and replace those pencils at the appropriate color table. It works like a charm and the students can take some ownership in keeping up with their learning materials. Its a great learning experience in teamwork and responsibility.\r\n\r\nThe ideas that this project has brought forth are pretty amazing. I've received a plethora of ideas for future endeavors when trying to save the Vanishing Pencils from happening. Thank you so much for you generous donation. The atmosphere is filled with energetic conversation, shared laughter, and spontaneous partner reading where stronger readers naturally support their peers. The materials from \"Living Science Lab: Seeds, Soil, Fossils, and Ants in Action\" have given my students the opportunity to experience science instead of simply reading about it in a textbook.\r\n\r\nMy students were so excited when they first saw all of the new materials. There is something special about watching students become genuinely curious and eager to investigate. The seeds and soil will allow us to observe plant growth firsthand and connect what we are learning about plants, energy, and life science to something students can actually see and measure. Our ant materials will give students the opportunity to observe animal behavior, movement, and how living things interact with their environment. The fossils will also bring another area of science to life by allowing students to examine real examples and make observations like young scientists.\r\n\r\nThese resources have helped me create more hands-on learning experiences in my classroom. My students can make predictions, observe changes, record information, ask questions, and discuss what they discover. These are important science skills, but they are also skills students remember much better when they are actively participating in the learning.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things about these materials is the excitement they have created. My students want to know what is going to happen next! They enjoy checking on our classroom investigations and comparing what they observe from one day to the next. That natural curiosity creates wonderful opportunities for meaningful classroom discussions.\r\n\r\nOur next steps will be to continue using these resources as we move through our Life Science and Earth Science lessons. Students will observe plant growth, investigate how plants obtain and use resources, study living organisms, and use the fossils as we learn more about Earth's past. They will continue recording observations and using evidence from what they see to explain their thinking.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for giving my students the opportunity to touch, observe, investigate, and discover science for themselves. These materials will be used with many groups of students and will continue making science exciting in our classroom for years to come. At this age, it is so important for young athletes to learn proper shooting form, balance, footwork, and follow-through before they begin focusing on shooting from longer distances. The shooting aids provided through this project have allowed my players to practice these skills correctly and consistently.\r\n\r\nBecause we now have these materials, I am able to spend more time teaching proper technique and giving each player meaningful repetitions during practice. The shooting aids provide immediate feedback and help the girls recognize what correct form should feel like. I have already seen improvement in their confidence, consistency, and willingness to work on their shooting. They are excited to use the equipment, and that excitement makes them more engaged and eager to improve.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest benefits of this project is that these materials can be used again and again. They are not helping just one group of players; they will continue to benefit future 5th and 6th grade basketball teams as well. Building strong fundamentals at this age gives our athletes a much better foundation as they move into junior high and high school basketball.\r\n\r\nI am extremely grateful to the SONIC Foundation for helping make this project possible.
