Students are engaged and learning. They are connecting to literature in ways that have shocked them. Through the novels, I was able to introduce and reinforce a variety of skills such as analyzing the plot, point of view, and theme of a fictional story. I feel the most critical skill students have learned, though, is connecting and empathy. The stories in the books have resonated with several students, creating a sense of understanding and belonging. \r\nReading in my classroom can look different depending on the lesson or the day. Sometimes we're listening to an audiobook and following along; sometimes I read out loud to them, or better yet, they read out loud to me; sometimes we read independently. Regardless of how we approach it, there are benefits to each, and I have witnessed them all through the use of these books. \r\nAll in all, this donation has made a significant impact on my classroom.
