This year I am hoping to start literature circles in my classroom which means I will have groups of students studying different novels TOGETHER with my guidance. The books I've selected are some of my "go-tos" when recommending to a reluctant reader. They are full of hard, engaging stories - stories that feel like real life. Students see themselves in these books which allows them to make important, life-changing connections to literature. I have made it a priority to provide my students with inclusive books that tell stories from a variety of perspectives. In these books, students will read about addiction, abuse, racism, death, illness, and consent. These are topics that they see and hear about everyday whether that be in themselves, their friends, their family, or the news. It is critical that teens learn how to discuss and better understand the world that we live in. By reading these challenging books, students will gather a greater sense of self and the world around them making them better contributors to society.
