That might seem overly dramatic, but this year has been most challenging because of the \"make-up\" of my class. Because we only have one fourth grade class, my challenge was to get the students through the end of the year without constant bickering and fighting. Darkness seemed to hover over our classroom, from the very beginning and sadly, 4th grade earned the reputation of being \"Oh no, it's that group\"! I knew that I would have a BEAST of a year!\r\n After exhausting my brain of 30 years of experience to figure out what to do. I had noticed that whenever I served snacks or when we did cooking activities, there was more cooperation and motivation. Unfortunately, I couId not afford to keep supplying snacks and needed ingredients. That was when I decided to apply for a grant. I was super excited when it was approved and boxes began to arrive. I was very strategic about opening the boxes of snacks- I waited for a day when the little darlings were MOST MONSTROUS! Takis, Pringle Chips, Candy, Fruit Snacks, and cookies were ripped out of the containers before their amazed eyes! \"All this is for us?\" many inquired. I affirmed that it was, but that every bit would go to another, more deserving group since we couldn't get along long enough to eat them! You won't believe me, but I know that this was a turning point! I even shared a little information about what I wrote in order to receive the grant. We discussed how we could utilize the items we received to improve our classroom relations. The non-food items, like calming stickers, Play Doh, and bendy pencils supported our mental health needs and helped ease anxiety. Even the water bottles were added to our Calm Down Corner allowing students to sip and chill! \r\n The truth, whole truth, and nothing but the truth is that our class is no longer known as \"The beast.\" The students are not perfect, nor am I . However, the plan worked as I \r\nused the items to create interactions that would strengthen our bond. With fewer negative interactions, I have been able to teach at a higher rate than before. I am so very thankful that your support helped me soothe my \"savage beast\" of a class and provided light at the end of the tunnel.","fullyFundedDate":1765512070407,"projectUrl":"project/snacks-to-feed-social-emotional-needs/9949196/","projectTitle":"Snacks to Feed Social Emotional Needs","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Johnigan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7488578"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_68666","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":169,"numTeachers":1,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":86,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":10,"gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"169.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":61.9,"schoolId":68666,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about City Day Community School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"City Day Community School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/ohio-department-of-education/city-day-community-school/68666"}
