Our school is full of amazing students and caring families many of which are facing hardships relating to housing and economic security. Your generous donations of hygiene items (toothpaste/toothbrushes/body wash/deodorant/laundry detergent) and socks, underwear, leggings, and sweatpants allowed me to create a place where students and families know that they can come to get these necessities that they need to be able to be at school and to be comfortable enough to focus on learning and making friends. I had hoped to create something like this for some time instead of constantly scrambling to obtain items when I heard from a family who was in need and this start off donation was what I needed to truly open up the store and let students, families and staff know about it. That has allowed me to expand this to include food, coats, bookbags, and school supplies. This has also made it more accessible for families to get what they need instead of having to ask around or have conversations that are often uncomfortable for them in identifying what they don't have - they can just ask to come to the Compassion Closet and get what they need.\r\n\r\n19 students have utilized the Compassion Closet in just the last two weeks of school. To give you a picture of some of the situations these students are facing, 3 of these families are living in hotels, one of these families had to relocate quickly due to domestic violence and another of these families had to relocate due to their previous apartment not passing safety inspections. It is huge to be able to immediately meet these basic needs through the closet when the family has overwhelming needs.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, this project is allowing me to now have a student group help to re-organize the Compassion Closet. They help me to sort through the sizes of clothing items and they are taking on a project of making labels and better organizing the closet. The students are thrilled to be helping and are very engaged in discussion about helping others. While many of them have often been on the receiving end of compassion, it is very powerful for them to have the opportunity to be the giver of compassion.\r\n\r\nI can't thank you enough for your generosity. Please know that your donation is making a difference in the lives of numerous students and will continue to do so. The opportunity to have new clean clothing and the resources to be clean and comfortable and not self conscious when they come to school makes a world of difference in their ability to feel like they belong and to be able to learn. I wish you could see their smiles when they pick out the items they need as a thank you for the contribution you have made!","fullyFundedDate":1756502001020,"projectUrl":"project/compassion-closet/9638620/","projectTitle":"Compassion Closet","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. O'Neill","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9513864"},{"teacherId":1677975,"projectId":8869145,"letterContent":"Thank you for the gracious donation of snacks for our students.
