All of us agreed that it was the final piece in making our room feel officially ready to welcome students back. \r\n\r\nI wish I could have captured the moment that my returning students entered the room and spotted the rug that we chose, as a class, at the end of last year. One student in particular stopped and took a second. When he realized what he was seeing, his entire face lit up. He turned to me and exclaimed, \"Ms. Seelbach, Ms. Seelbach, look! Look!\" He ran to the rug and jumped on it, then sat down, then laid down and rolled around, being silly. He told the new students in the class that he helped pick out the rug. \r\n\r\nIt was a moment of silliness, excitement, and joy. It seems like such a simple thing, but a durable rug is the heart of any classroom. We start our mornings on the rug for morning meeting, it is an area for center work learning, and it has quickly become the favorite spot for doing puzzles and playing board games. We had our first morning meeting with our new seats. Students learned the routine of gathering them and putting them back, sitting on them safely, and for the first time we came together on our matching seats. \r\n\r\nI watched as students grabbed stools for their peers - an opportunity to celebrate their thoughtfulness. Again - this is possible with these lightweight, easy to carry stools in a way that it's not with bulky chairs. The students were so excited to receive these stools and they are exactly what we needed for meetings.
