Since the arrival of the binder supplies, students have learned how to organize their materials with color coded tabs. Students were then taught how to use and update these binders to support their learning. For instance, students have created reference materials for their math assignments including multiplication times tables, fraction anchor charts, and laminated hundreds charts on which they can write using dry erase markers. \r\nNow that we're nearing the end of the second quarter, I see students using their reference materials daily when they can not solve equations independently. \r\nStudents are also tracking their daily assignments and self-monitoring their academic progress using these binders. I see an overall improvement in the students' executive functioning skills; most notably with their organization, task initation, and self-monitoring. Using 3D printers also helps students develop creativity, problem-solving skills, and experience with new technology that will be useful in future careers.\r\nOur 3D printer serves as an excellent positive behavior reinforcement tool because it offers students meaningful, creative rewards that extend beyond traditional incentives. When students demonstrate positive behaviors like following classroom rules, showing kindness to peers, or completing assignments on time, they can earn the privilege to design and print their own creations. This approach is particularly effective because it combines immediate gratification with long-term learning benefits—students not only receive a tangible reward they can keep and share, but they also develop valuable STEM skills and creative thinking abilities.
