My students created very colorful flower designs and patterns on the shrinky dinks using the permanent markers. They watched them change shape while they were in the toaster oven. They built the BristleBots and ended up with a great product to take home. The supplies in the kit were good quality and the directions were easy to follow. I had not originally planned to use the kit with the class I did, but after looking it over, I decided it was the perfect STEM topic and project for the class I used it with. It was really nice that none of the parts were tiny so that even the students who have difficulty with fine motor skills were able to participate. At the end of class they were racing their bots around the tables and they were so proud of what they had built. They recently painted their backgrounds and wrote out their words using the same stencils so they are unified. \r\n\r\nWhen they saw the size of the canvases they were a little surprised that they were so big but still excited. They notice a real difference in the quality of the different brands of colored pencils and the ease in which they can do techniques such as shading and blending.\r\n\r\nThey were excited when I told them that I was able to secure some Prismacolor colored pencil sets for each table. \r\n\r\nMy seventh graders are currently using them for their Graffiti tags and my 6th graders are using them to color drawings in their sketchbooks relating to the seven elements of art. Some of my 8th graders will be using them to color their candy theme tennis shoe drawings. In Art, rhythm is a lot like pattern but it is not exact. It allows a viewer to see the whole piece and not just focus on one area with the use of things such as colors, shapes, images, etc. They are scattered around the canvas or whatever surface one happens to be working on. \r\n\r\nFor this project my 8th graders learned a variety of different acrylic painting techniques that they could use. They learned about collage and had to incorporate some of this in their guitar and had to add other materials to create a mixed media work of art. When they first learned that they were going to paint guitars instead of a flat canvas, huge smiles spread across their faces. \r\n\r\nNext week my 7th graders will be learning about Zentangle and practice drawing a variety of different Zentangle patterns. My students will create a variety of paintings focused on wellness and mental health that will be hung on the walls of our building outside the counselors offices and our school social worker. They will also be in areas where all students can see them. My students loved learning how to solder and the Jitterbug Soldering kits were the perfect introduction project. We will be finishing our Jitterbugs after the break and students were excited in their new found skills.
