When we can then move to self-selected texts and students look for these same elements in these texts, students are able to build on their developing analytical skills with a text that means something to them.\r\n\r\nMany of my students do not read on grade level. I challenge students with our shared texts to stretch their abilities and comfort zones to struggle with new vocabulary, complex structures, and unfamiliar topics because we are working together and can offer the supports and structures that students need to be successful.
