Intersession is a series of learning events, a mini-semester spanning one week, designed to engage students, teachers, corporate, and community partners in learning experiences that bridge the classroom and the professional world. More than a field trip, intersessions intentionally guide students to draw connections between the STEM subjects, future careers, and their communities. There is a special relationship formed when a student bonds with a horse that they have worked with for a week. I am offering my students a one-of-a-kind experience through an equine centered intersession. With our urban student population, very few of our students have had the experience of being on a farm or riding a horse and I would like to change that. Growing up in a small farming town, I learned many life lessons in a barn; which is something I would like to pass on to the students at Hughes. Last year I had the pleasure of watching a student who was 100% against working with horses and other students develop a bond with his horse. He was an entirely different student after that bond was formed and has chosen to continue volunteering at the ranch helping with cleaning, grooming, and prepping the horses for trail rides.
