Some arrive hungry, anxious, or simply needing a safe place to regroup before returning to class. Thanks to your generosity, I now have healthy snacks, mini pretzels, fruit snacks, and microwaveable meals available for students who need them most. Something as simple as a warm bowl of ravioli or a small snack has helped calm worried minds, improve focus, and remind students that someone cares about their well-being. Seeing their smiles and hearing them say, \"Thank you, Ms. Poe,\" has been a powerful reminder that meeting basic needs helps children feel ready to learn.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stands out was when a student came to my office overwhelmed and unable to concentrate because they hadn't eaten since the night before. After spending time talking together and enjoying a quick meal and snack, I watched that student's entire demeanor change. They left my office feeling calmer, more confident, and ready to return to class. Moments like these happen more often than many people realize, and your kindness allows me to respond immediately with both emotional support and practical care.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my counseling office continues to be a place where students know they are seen, heard, and valued. As we move forward, these resources will continue supporting individual counseling sessions, small groups, crisis interventions, and students who simply need a little extra encouragement to make it through the day. Thank you for investing not only in their academic success but also in their health, confidence, and hope. Your compassion is making a lasting difference in the lives of Kimberley Park students.","fullyFundedDate":1778020318840,"projectUrl":"project/helping-my-students-focus-on-learning-n/10086888/","projectTitle":"Helping My Students Focus on Learning, Not Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Poe","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10227389_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1769134739741","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/c-poe"},{"teacherId":10227389,"projectId":10085973,"letterContent":"The resources from this project have made a meaningful impact on my counseling program. During individual sessions, small groups, and classroom guidance lessons, students are learning how to identify their emotions, make responsible choices, solve conflicts, and communicate respectfully with others. The Making Good Choices Match-Ups and Conversation Cubes have transformed important social-emotional lessons into engaging, hands-on activities that encourage meaningful discussions. The emotional regulation and anxiety books provide practical coping strategies that students can use both at school and at home, while the coloring books and colored pencils offer a calming, creative way for students to practice mindfulness and reduce stress.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding outcomes has been seeing students apply these skills beyond the counseling office. Children are using calming strategies when they become frustrated, talking through problems with classmates, and making more thoughtful decisions during the school day. Some students who were once hesitant to share their feelings are now confidently expressing their emotions and asking for help when they need it. Your generosity has provided more than just materials—it has given my students tools to build confidence, strengthen relationships, and develop lifelong social-emotional skills that will help them succeed both inside and outside the classroom. Their eyes lit up with excitement, and before we even began our lesson, they were asking, \"When can we play?\" What they didn't realize was that they were about to learn important social-emotional skills while having fun.\r\n\r\nThese resources have transformed our counseling lessons into highly engaging experiences. During one of our 5th-grade classroom guidance lessons, students worked in teams using the Charades for Kids Game to act out emotions, positive coping strategies, and conflict-resolution scenarios. They laughed, encouraged one another, and built confidence as they practiced communication and teamwork. We also incorporated interactive buzzer games to review topics such as kindness, bullying prevention, decision-making, and healthy friendships. Even some of my quieter students became eager to participate because the games created a safe, exciting environment where everyone wanted to be involved.\r\n\r\nThe impact goes far beyond the games themselves. Your generosity has helped create a classroom where students are excited to learn, collaborate, and connect with one another. Thank you for investing in my students. However, several students attending our school's summer program have already had the chance to visit my office, and they absolutely fell in love with it! They immediately commented on how calm, welcoming, and comfortable it felt, and they even begged to come back every day (which definitely made me smile!). Seeing their excitement confirmed that this space is already becoming exactly what I hoped it would be—a place where children feel safe, valued, and at peace.\r\n\r\nThis upcoming school year will bring an even greater need for a space like this. A nearby Title I elementary school closed, and our school will be welcoming the majority of its students. I know this transition will be difficult for many children as they leave the school they have always called home and adjust to a new environment. My goal was to create a space that feels less like an office and more like a comforting retreat where students know they are welcomed, supported, and cared for. Because of your generosity, I can provide a safe, calming environment where students can process their emotions, build relationships, and know they always have a place to belong. The hygiene kits made a tremendous impact. Each student received a Kimberley Park goodie bag filled with travel-size body wash, ultra-soft washcloths, lip balm, and other self-care essentials. Many of our students attend a Title I school, and for some, these items are not readily available at home. Watching their faces light up as they received their own personal care kit reminded me that even the smallest gifts can communicate, *\"You matter.\"*\r\n\r\nThe supplies also helped create an environment where students felt comfortable asking questions they may have been too embarrassed to ask elsewhere. We used the materials during our discussion about healthy hygiene habits, body changes, and self-care routines. The girls became actively engaged, asked thoughtful questions, encouraged one another, and left with greater confidence in caring for themselves. Several students shared how excited they were to take their goodie bags home and begin using the products immediately.\r\n\r\nThis project has become more than a one-time lesson—it has laid the foundation for ongoing conversations about health, confidence, and personal wellness. We plan to continue meeting with our girls throughout the school year, building on topics such as self-esteem, friendships, emotional wellness, and leadership. Thanks to your kindness, our students not only gained practical resources but also felt seen, valued, and supported.
