This critical moment in African American history and North Carolina's past had always felt abstract to students. Using the manipulatives, students physically reconstructed the events of 1898. They arranged figures to represent the diverse community of Wilmington before the violence, then worked through the sequence of events that led to the massacre and its devastating aftermath. As they moved the pieces, students began to grasp the human reality behind the historical facts. \r\n\r\nI want to assure you that these materials are being used intentionally and with great care.
