Through this memoir, students learned about the trauma the author, Elie Wiesel experienced in the concentration camps and how his resilience shaped him and allowed him to survive. Students also learned about hope and the changes others can make in the world to help overcome their backgrounds in order to make it in the world today. My students found compassion and empathy for others while reading this novel. This novel helped my students to understand why Holocaust education matters and forgetting or denying history can lead to repeated atrocities.\r\nAcademically, students were exposed to literary concepts such as symbolism, themes, imagery, tone, and characterization. \r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is engaging and interactive. We read things that are interesting and relevant. We read fiction and nonfiction. Reading involves annotating so that we understand what we are reading. Students sometimes read in small groups or with a partner. This book was relevant to my students. They loved this book and were excited to read it everyday! If a student enjoys the book, they are more likely to be engaged. This book allowed me to teach so many English concepts because my students wanted to know more about the characters. Because of their engagement, teaching was simpler.\r\n\r\nWe live in a rural community where access to new books is not common. When the new books came in, my students were beyond excited. Once we began reading and I was able to put a book in their hands, they were even more excited. Each student was able to follow along in a brand new book without pages torn out or other damages. It was a new book and something many of them could relate to. They took care of the books so that other students next year could read and enjoy them as much as they did. I loved seeing their faces when the books arrived. Now that we have finished reading, the first thing they asked was what book we were reading next. It thrills me to have students so excited to be reading! This could not have been possible without the donor's generosity. After reading this book, we were able to take a field trip to a Holocaust memorial that went right along with our book. That was an extra special treat. The book and the field trip were so special to my students. Together, students gained sensitivity to the suffering and the diverse experience of others. I am so appreciative to the donors who allowed us to read about Elie Wiesel's experiences in the novel, Night.","fullyFundedDate":1757884734752,"projectUrl":"project/voices-of-remembrance-teaching-empathy/9681936/","projectTitle":"Voices of Remembrance: Teaching Empathy and Justice Through Night","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Trivette","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1686718_orig.jpg?crop=960,960,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1634141425756","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1686718"},{"teacherId":10046574,"projectId":9386582,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for giving generously to my classroom supplies project request. They have also created timeline of famous Hispanic Americans. They used the colorful sharpies to differentiate between the people and years displayed on the timeline. We have also used to glue sticks and the colored pencils. It has been such a blessing to have new, quality materials to use for our projects. \r\nWhen I showed them that we had new materials to use in their projects, their faces lit up like it was Christmas.
