John Steinbeck's The Moon is Down is a marvelous tale of resistance and the human spirit in the face of evil. I want my World History students to get a sense of what it was like for people to live under occupation and how they persisted, even when it seemed hopeless. We will read the book, participate in discussions of characters' actions and motivations, try to understand the complexity of war, and write reflective essays; students will ponder what they would do in similar situations and make connections to current day wars and the people involved. Students will learn empathy for all participants in war and examine the concept of just war as well.
