We made several attempts to grow beautiful lotus flowers but were unable to bring this dream to fruition during the project period. We began the project in March 2025 by placing lotus seeds in water. After the seeds sprouted, we carefully monitored their growth until it was time to transplant them into pots. Once planted, the lotus plants developed healthy green, round leaves, and we were hopeful that they would continue growing and eventually produce beautiful blooms.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, despite our efforts, none of the lotus plants produced flowers. Climate conditions played a significant role in the growth process. Lotus flowers thrive in warm, stable environments, such as those found in India, where they are commonly grown. North Carolina's weather can be unpredictable, and fluctuating temperatures affected the plants' development. We studied the ideal growing conditions for lotus flowers and observed that changes in temperature often caused the leaves to deteriorate or die back. This cycle occurred several times and extended well beyond the project's original deadline. Although we have not yet achieved our goal, we remain committed to the project and continue to care for the plants. We will keep you updated on our progress as we work toward making the Lotus Flower Resiliency Garden a reality. We are hopeful that, with continued effort and favorable growing conditions, we will eventually see the beautiful blooms we envisioned.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity, encouragement, and belief in our students and this project.","fullyFundedDate":1743991395152,"projectUrl":"project/lotus-flower-resiliency-garden-of-restor/8983932/","projectTitle":"Lotus Flower Resiliency Garden of Restoration","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Baker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9087523"},{"teacherId":10239577,"projectId":9677605,"letterContent":"Thanks to the generous donation of sensory tiles and other SEL resources, our K–2 students are using calm-down corners and sensory spaces daily to help regulate emotions, refocus, and return to learning successfully. One memorable moment involved a student who was feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. After spending a few minutes using the sensory tiles and calming tools, the student was able to identify their feelings, regain control, and rejoin the class ready to participate. These resources have become valuable tools for teaching emotional awareness, self-regulation, and problem-solving skills in both individual and small-group settings.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and eager to explore them. Many commented on how inviting and comforting the calm-down spaces felt. The mats gave each child their own personal space to relax, refocus, and calm their bodies before returning to learning activities. It has truly helped create a peaceful and positive classroom environment.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the yoga mats, they were beyond excited! The mats have quickly become one of their favorite classroom resources, and they take great pride in caring for them and using them responsibly.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our social-emotional learning lessons, we plan to use the yoga mats for mindfulness activities, stretching exercises, partner poses, and relaxation time. Using the butterfly kits, mesh habitats, and magnifying glasses, students closely observed each stage of the caterpillars' growth. One unforgettable moment was when students noticed a caterpillar forming its chrysalis. There was an immediate sense of awe as they gathered around, sharing their observations aloud and asking thoughtful \"why\" and \"how\" questions. When the materials first arrived, the excitement was contagious. Students were amazed to have real living organisms in their care, and their curiosity sparked rich conversations and deep engagement every day.\r\n\r\nThis project was especially impactful because it created authentic inclusion opportunities between my EC Pre-K class and our NC Pre-K class. Students learned side by side, sharing what they noticed and supporting one another during observations. The hands-on, visual nature of the materials allowed all learners to fully participate, especially those who benefit from seeing and touching their learning. It was powerful to watch students connect not only with the science content, but also with each other in such a natural and supportive environment.\r\n\r\nReleasing the butterflies was a joyful and memorable culmination of our learning. Students watched with excitement as the butterflies took flight, making real-world connections to everything they had observed throughout the life cycle. This experience has deepened their understanding of growth and change, and we will continue building on it by exploring other living things and their environments. This project created lasting moments of wonder and helped foster a genuine appreciation for the natural world.","fullyFundedDate":1774728179563,"projectUrl":"project/its-morphin-time-the-butterfly-life-c/10167758/","projectTitle":"It's Morphin' Time: The Butterfly Life Cycle","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Shearin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4683335_orig.jpg?crop=475,475,x0,y49&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738376008206","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4683335"},{"teacherId":4683335,"projectId":9647627,"letterContent":"Our new couch and chair have been a total game-changer!
