Using polymer clay, students created miniature sculptures of their choice or designed Christmas ornaments. Since this project took place during the holiday season, most students chose to create ornaments.\r\n\r\nTo make the ornaments, students rolled out the clay, similar to working with cookie dough, and used cookie cutters to create various shapes. Each student was required to incorporate an original three-dimensional element to personalize their design. Once the clay was baked and hardened, students painted their finished pieces. They were excited to take their creations home and share them with their families just in time for Christmas.\r\n\r\nI have sufficient supplies to repeat this project with my spring classes. This is the first clay project most of these students have done in the last 2 years, so they have been very excited for this. Originally, I planned to do this project at the beginning of December, but due to a last minute classroom move (I did NOT want to risk losing or breaking any clay projects during that process) and the busyness of the holidays it got pushed back. The anticipation for this project has really built up for students over the last month and a half.\r\n\r\nTo start this project, I had students brainstorm what object they wanted their clay to be and create at least 3 different sketches. Next we talked about texture and what objects around the classroom could be used to make texture. We practiced this with play doh to make sure our ideas would work. Today, we moved onto using the air dry clay, needless to say, class was rambunctious and the energy was high! Our next steps are to paint the clay, seal it with mod podge, and attach a magnet to the back. Since this will take us a few more weeks to complete I am attaching pictures of students' sketches and clay so far. \r\n\r\nThis has been a great learning experience for my students and for me as a teacher. It's hilarious you should see it.\r\nThe part that's been the quietest but also made the biggest difference has been the hygiene products.
