Even though the situations are very different, both texts ask students to think about people's experiences, choices, and struggles in ways that build empathy and understanding.\r\n\r\nIn The 57 Bus, students learn about the importance of identity and acceptance through Sasha, who identifies as agender. The book shows how important it is to respect people for who they are and to understand the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ teens. At the same time, Richard's decision on the bus reminds students how one quick choice can change lives forever. The story also raises questions about justice, asking whether young people who make mistakes deserve punishment or the chance to grow and change. By sharing both Sasha's and Richard's points of view, the book helps students see that situations are more complicated than they might seem at first, and that empathy matters.\r\n\r\nAmerican Dirt teaches lessons about family, survival, and courage. Lydia and her son are forced to flee from cartel violence in Mexico, and their journey shows the very real struggles of migrants who leave everything behind to find safety. The story line in American Dirt is one that many of my students are familiar with, which makes the text even more impactful and relatable. The novel makes students think about what they would do to protect the people they love, and it shows the strength that family bonds can give in hard times. It also shows the harsh impact of violence and makes students reflect on how much privilege they may have if they live in safer conditions. Still, even in the middle of danger, the book shows moments of kindness, bravery, and hope that prove how strong people can be when they come together.\r\n\r\nWhen we look at both books side by side, we see some of the same lessons: the importance of empathy, the power of storytelling, and the idea that life is full of difficult choices without easy answers. Both remind students that everyone has a story worth hearing, and that understanding those stories can help them grow into more thoughtful and compassionate people.\r\n\r\nMy students also have the opportunity to complete mini projects that connect directly to their chosen book, allowing them to engage more deeply with its literary components, particularly themes. These projects include options to create a visual representation of a key theme, write a personal reflection that draws connections between the text and their own lives, develop a multimedia presentation that explores a major issue raised in the book, or craft a piece of creative writing—such as a poem, short story, or letter—from the perspective of one of the characters. Each project is designed to help students think critically about their book while also giving them choice and creativity in how they demonstrate their understanding.\r\n\r\nI appreciate your support as I work to develop cultural awareness and empathy in our students.","fullyFundedDate":1748869788581,"projectUrl":"project/real-voices-real-issues-empowering-stu/9374269/","projectTitle":"Real Voices, Real Issues: Empowering Students Through Social Justice Narratives","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ybarra","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4662691_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1622987942939","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4662691"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2390","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1753,"numTeachers":96,"percentFrplEligible":84,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":27,"percentWhite":25,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":38,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"18.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":57.4,"schoolId":2390,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about A.L.
