I now have a library of books that reflect the variety of special needs elementary school students I serve. From Down syndrome to Autism, kids with sensory challenges, to kids who need speech output devices, kids who communicate using sign language, and kids with other speech challenges like Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), and word retrieval difficulties. \r\nOne kindergarten student in particular, who has Down syndrome, was immediately awestruck by one of the books called Katie Can!, which is a book about a little girl with Down Syndrome. As I read to her, she would exclaim, \"Aubrey can + (whatever the character Katie was doing on each page. That day, Aubrey insisted on reading the book three times! She was so excited, repeatedly pointing to the illustrations and commenting on each page with glee. It was such a rewarding day! This particular student is in a cluster classroom with only special needs peers. It is a sweet class! Her teacher asked to borrow \"Katie Can!\" to read/share with the regular education kindergarten classes to teach them about her special needs students and promote empathy and understanding. So this project reached even further than my immediate expectations!","fullyFundedDate":1744242042039,"projectUrl":"project/i-see-me/9234625/","projectTitle":"I See Me!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hilary Hines","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2438355_orig.png?crop=589,589,x1,y289&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1620349626192","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/hilary-hines"},{"teacherId":9490399,"projectId":9385004,"letterContent":"My first-grade students were so excited to see all of the materials for our STEM bins! By play, I mean to manipulate and build things as they are learning, while they play as well. \r\n\r\nEvery morning, the student are allowed to choose a STEM bin for their table to play with until morning announcements. The students love each bin that we have, and this is because of you! They choose between magnatiles, magnetic blocks, building blocks, and several other materials. This time in the morning allows them to come in and get prepared for the day ahead. They are given 30 minutes to 'play' before we have to dive into working. \r\n\r\nWe are very grateful for each generous donation made toward this project. My students are intrigued by the cards' engaging and relatable pictures (they get tired of just looking at my face!). The card decks are powerful tools I use daily to provide visual support to help my students with speech sound production. Multisensory cueing is essential for instruction and learning in speech therapy. Visual cues are essential when working on speech sound production for children with speech sound disorders. The Bjorem card decks provide another modality to support the auditory information I am presenting during instruction. By incorporating the Bjorem Speech Sound Cues card decks into therapy sessions, I have enhanced my therapeutic instruction in the area of articulation skills and have significantly increased student success! In addition to using the decks with my students for speech sound production, I am incorporating the decks in my therapy sessions for students working on language and literacy skills to support skills such as story building. I am grateful to have the multi-sensory, flexible use Bjorem Speech Sound Cues card decks in my therapy toolbox, and will use them for many years to come.
