We have used this book for multiple years now, in multiple grades. It has been a hit, no matter what grade we have read it in. We even went as far as buying more books so the entire grade level can read this novel. Even years later, the students still talk about it and mention that it was one of their favorite novels we read. This novel really hits home to students about being treated differently and makes them think about how they treat others. My third graders have a wide range of reading abilities, and these materials give them opportunities to read about topics that interest them while building confidence and stamina. The magazines and games provide an exciting alternative to traditional reading assignments and encourage students to see reading as something they can enjoy.\r\n\r\nMy students are learning that reading is not just something we do for a grade—it is a skill that helps us understand the world around us. Through these texts, students practice important skills such as identifying the main idea and supporting details, determining the meaning of unfamiliar words, making inferences, asking and answering questions, and using evidence from a text to support their thinking. The variety of reading levels also allows students to work with texts that are appropriately challenging without feeling overwhelmed.\r\n\r\nI especially love seeing students who may not normally choose to read become interested when they find a topic that catches their attention. The colorful, high-interest magazines encourage students to explore new subjects, learn new vocabulary, and share what they discover with their classmates. The reading games provide another way for students to practice language and literacy skills while working together. These resources are helping us build a classroom where every student can find something worth reading—and where every child can begin to see themselves as a reader.","fullyFundedDate":1663728256397,"projectUrl":"project/reading-to-expand-knowledge/6487191/","projectTitle":"Reading to Expand Knowledge","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Danza","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2973437_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1512491195835","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-danza"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2745","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":605,"numTeachers":43,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":34,"percentWhite":26,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":35,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":3,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"14.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":48.2,"schoolId":2745,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Greene County Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Greene County Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/greene-county-schools/greene-co-middle-school/2745"}
