The magazines and games provide an exciting alternative to traditional reading assignments and encourage students to see reading as something they can enjoy.\r\n\r\nMy students are learning that reading is not just something we do for a grade—it is a skill that helps us understand the world around us. Through these texts, students practice important skills such as identifying the main idea and supporting details, determining the meaning of unfamiliar words, making inferences, asking and answering questions, and using evidence from a text to support their thinking. The variety of reading levels also allows students to work with texts that are appropriately challenging without feeling overwhelmed.\r\n\r\nI especially love seeing students who may not normally choose to read become interested when they find a topic that catches their attention. The colorful, high-interest magazines encourage students to explore new subjects, learn new vocabulary, and share what they discover with their classmates. The reading games provide another way for students to practice language and literacy skills while working together.
