Students have enjoyed learning more about their own \"makeup\" and the DNA aspects of their selves. Students have also enjoyed building and constructing using the Knex kits and building different models that they were assigned. \r\n\r\nStudents were shocked that the DNA strands were so visible and yet so small! We had so much fun exploring this concept and making the DNA necklaces that I forgot to even take pictures of them! I hope that I can do this same activity later with another class. \r\n\r\nThe Knex kits we have only used once, but I can use them over and over, unlike the DNA necklace kits. Furthermore, the large area rug is crucial in establishing a homey feel that allows students to be comfortable, actively counteracting the rigid, impersonal nature of the traditional classroom setting. This transformation of the physical space communicates a powerful message to our students: this is a community where comfort and intellectual exploration are prioritized, directly countering the effects of resource scarcity often experienced in underfunded facilities.\r\n\r\nI have seen a direct impact on student engagement and comfort in my room. I am seeing growth more it seems because students work to get the small treat that I allow winners to eat in class. The comfort items, hand warmers and lotions, have created a more positive and focused learning environment, particularly during colder months, resulting in fewer classroom disruptions related to discomfort. The label makers have empowered students to take ownership of their organization, leading to improved study habits and a reduction in lost or misplaced materials. Most importantly, we've observed a significant increase in positive behavior referrals, indicating that the initiative is effectively reinforcing desired actions.
