Instead of simply learning about the impact of natural disasters, our ninth-grade students became engineers, problem-solvers, and emergency response teams tasked with saving lives following a devastating Category 4 hurricane on North Carolina's Roanoke Island.\r\n\r\nUsing the materials provided through this project, students worked collaboratively in engineering teams to design and construct rescue shelters and transport trailers capable of delivering emergency supplies and transporting stranded people and animals to safety. Each team operated within a limited materials budget, requiring students to make strategic decisions, evaluate resources, and apply the engineering design process. Their creations were tested using Sphero RVR robotic vehicles as they navigated a simulated disaster zone filled with obstacles, including fallen trees, debris, flooded areas, and downed power lines.\r\n\r\nThe excitement and engagement were incredible! Students who might not typically take the lead during traditional classroom activities became actively involved in designing, building, testing, and improving their solutions. The opportunity to use robotics and everyday materials to solve a realistic problem brought out their creativity, teamwork, and determination. One of the most rewarding aspects was seeing students discover that their initial designs did not always work as planned—and that failure was simply an opportunity to rethink, redesign, and try again.\r\n\r\nThis experience helped students make meaningful connections between Earth and Environmental Science, engineering, technology, and real-world disaster preparedness. They developed critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while discovering that STEM is about much more than memorizing scientific concepts—it is about applying knowledge to improve lives and solve challenges.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to build upon this experience by continuing to incorporate hands-on STEM design challenges that connect classroom learning to authentic problems. Students are using binders and dividers to build semester-long AP portfolios organized around entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, management, and personal finance. Dry-erase boards and markers give students opportunities to practice financial calculations, review concepts, and work through business decisions collaboratively. Sticky notes and colored supplies are being used for brainstorming, customer research, Business Model Canvas activities, marketing plans, case analyses, graphs, and group presentations. Index cards and binder rings are especially helpful for creating portable vocabulary and concept-review tools.\r\n\r\nThey are analyzing decisions from the perspectives of entrepreneurs, businesses, and consumers, using their dry-erase boards to calculate and compare options and their portfolio materials to organize their research and conclusions. The next steps are for students to refine their ideas, analyze the results, and present their recommendations while explaining the financial and business reasoning behind their decisions.\r\n\r\nUltimately, I want my classroom to feel less like a traditional classroom and more like a place where students can think, collaborate, analyze, create, and make decisions like young business professionals.
