This equipment has already had a significant impact across multiple classes, enhancing both the depth and quality of student learning experiences.\r\n\r\nWe have integrated the microplate reader into several laboratory investigations, including studies on enzyme kinetics and optimal reaction conditions. In my junior IB Biology classes, students were tasked with troubleshooting a university-level protocol and then developing their own. These student-designed protocols were subsequently tested by senior students, who evaluated their clarity, precision, and effectiveness. This collaborative approach has strengthened both experimental design and scientific communication skills.\r\n\r\nAs a result, many of my IB Biology juniors have designed their Internal Assessments around applications of the microplate reader. Current student investigations include analyzing alpha-amylase activity through quantification of starch breakdown, measuring biofilm growth and treatment efficacy using crystal violet assays, and examining enzyme kinetics with guaiacol.\r\n\r\nIn our honors and standard biology courses, we are preparing to implement a research project focused on water quality and bioremediation using native switchgrass. This project is being developed by one of my junior teaching assistants as part of his CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) project for the IB program.\r\n\r\nThe microplate reader has quickly become a cornerstone of both the IB Biology program and the broader biology laboratory curriculum at Williams, providing students with access to advanced, college-level scientific techniques and fostering authentic research experiences.","fullyFundedDate":1768237430656,"projectUrl":"project/real-science-real-data-microplate-read/9992836/","projectTitle":"Real Science, Real Data: Microplate Reader for the Biology Program","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Monahan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9758689"},{"teacherId":10336666,"projectId":9866351,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your support of this project. With your help, we were able to provide two fully stocked Little Free Libraries to elementary schools in our neighborhood. One will be at Hillcrest and the other at Grove Park. Both of these schools feed into Williams! Our hope is to help form a love of reading from a young age that will carry throughout their matriculation all the way to Williams. \r\n These libraries will directly help provide access to reading material for students in our community at no cost to them. According to the Little Free Library Project, placing these libraries in a community results in 93% of children reporting better access, and 49% reporting that they are reading more frequently. \r\n This project also allowed our Student Council and Bulldog community to act in accordance do our mission of being active and engaged global citizens.
