We want to instill a love of books and reading as a joy, not a chore. The North Carolina Children's Book Award project is always a hit with kids. This year, with my starting in a new school we did not have the funding to purchase these books. The Donors Choose Grant allowed us to fill in the rest of the books needed to do a thorough job of examining all of the books in order to cast an informed vote. The students examine all twelve books in the category. I split the picture books between myself and the classrooms. Six books were done with lessons in the library. The additional books were placed in \"You've Been Book'd\" bags and placed on the classroom doors to be read by the classroom teachers to have some fun with reading. The kids are so excited when a new bag pops up. They cannot wait to see what treasure it may hold. \r\n\r\nEach student will a little later this month vote for the one book that they believe was the best book. The votes are compiled across the state of North Carolina. We will be able to see if our school vote mirrors the state votes. In addition, their work on this project allows an actual author to be given a state award based on student choice in our state. Paperbacks that could be saved have been reinforced with protective coverings, and other salvageable books have received tape support to extend their life.\r\n\r\nLooking forward, every new book added to the collection will be processed and protected before it reaches the shelves, ensuring durability from the start. These efforts directly impact students by keeping books in their hands longer, providing consistent access to quality literature, and creating an inviting environment that encourages reading.\r\n\r\nThis grant does more than preserve books—it preserves opportunities for literacy, learning, and exploration.
