The students were ecstatic to receive their own copy of \"Because of Winn Dixie\" along with a flashlight and dog stuffy. I gifted the students their items two days before break, and the following morning more than half of the kids came back excited to share they had started rereading the book at home. I cannot wait to hear how many were able to finish it after their two week break!\r\n\r\nPrior to gifting the students these items, the class shared a few copies of the books to follow along as I read the story aloud to the class. We had rich discussions about the characters, plot, theme, and enjoyed making predictions about what might happen next. Winn Dixie is a silly character and we all had a lot of fun following Opal's journey. The students couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I could tell their engagement in this novel was much higher than our typical read aloud texts. The students were expected to follow a much longer journey through a character's day to day life in order to conclude her story. \r\n\r\nThank you for your generosity! My class was very fortunate to receive this gift, and I'm sure it will be well loved over this winter break.
