I have been able to constantly provide tissues and hand wipes for students. Introducing Just Mercy gave students the opportunity to engage with complex themes of justice, equity, and the importance of empathy. Because my students were expanding and commanding English language learners, the book also supported growth in critical reading skill summarizing, identifying themes, making inferences, and connecting personal experiences to broader social issues.
