At World Journalism Prep in Flushing, NY, my students read, compose text, create art, and have meaningful discussions about enduring issues and their connections to their own lives. \r\n\r\nCurrently, AP Literature is in self-chosen book clubs. They formed them with friends, casual peers who like the same genre as they do, or completely newfound reading buddies. In these groups, they were given a stack of books, many of which came from the books your donations. They perused modern literature, classics, varied voices and perspectives. They chose their books and were mostly able to begin reading that very same day thanks to the sets of texts I was able to purchase. \r\n\r\nI gave them bookmarks, they created reading schedules and they were off. Last week we had our first book club meeting (I join a different club each reading cycle). The room filled with vibrant conversation and excitement. Some had read ahead. We all talked and shared thoughts and huddled in our groups. \r\nNext week we will meet again, books and bookmarks in tow, to temporarily leave NYC in favor of the setting setting of our current titles. \r\n\r\nThank you again for letting us transport to new places. We will never forget your generosity. Students didn't have the chance to rewatch on demand, to replay parts they missed, to listen again and truly understand. It was a barrier to their independence and to their confidence as learners.\r\n\r\nNow, everything has changed for the better. They can rewind, pause, and revisit at their own pace. They gain a sense of control over their learning, and with that autonomy, their curiosity and resilience grow.\r\n\r\nOur smart board is aging and its audio quality has always been a challenge. The school no longer has the resources to repair it. But today, a new solution arrived. I connected the audio system you donated to my computer, and suddenly the audio flows from my computer to the smart board with crystal-clear quality. It's a revelation.\r\n\r\nIt's so much better now. All thanks to you. You have truly made a difference in my work and in the education I can provide for my students. Your generosity has opened doors, lifted voices, and strengthened our classroom community. One of our Art teachers (there's two of us, so my co-worker) has been out on leave, so the locks have really been helpful when another class has been in our classroom, or when substitutes have been facilitating the other Art class. Between the locks and broom, the Art room is staying clean and organized! And young artists are appreciative that their space and materials are being looked after. They have also really appreciated the room decor, as more posters are actually staying on the walls now, thanks to the Velcro tape. The pencils have also been giving welcome surprises as unexpected rewards. Artists really light up when out of nowhere they get a fun smelling pencil they get to keep, and they are so glad to hear they are doing great work. It's such a small way to make them feel noticed and appreciated, and it goes a long way. Thanks for helping us do that!
